Elena Nikitina
Elena Nikitina is a scholar at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Her area of expertise includes environmental policy and governance in Russia as well as the problems transfer and adaptation of environmental instruments. Elena has published in the area of environmental security in Russia and the crisis of protective mechanisms. She has completed a project for the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research exploring how to effectively shape human institutional responses to flood hazards in four Asian countries (Thailand, Russia, Vietnam and Japan). This project explores questions important to the GECHS research agenda such as: What current flood risk reduction institutions and policies are currently in place at regional and national scales? Why do existing institutions and policies not always protect human security? How can institutional capacity in each of the four selected countries make local communities more resilient to hazards in the coming years? How to shift from conventional hazard protection to disaster risk management?
