Plenary discussion “Human Security and Policy Implications”
This plenary discussion aimed to shed light on ways of increasing human security in the context of global environmental change. And the discussion focused on both opportunities and obstacles for sustainable solutions.The plenary discussion was chaired by Susanne Moser. Susanne is Director of Susanne Moser Research & Consulting and a Research Associate at the University of California-Santa Cruz. Her work focuses on adaptation to climate change in coastal, health and forest sectors, resilience, decision support, and effective climate change communication in support of social change. She is a Research Associate of the GECHS Project.
The panelists included:
Paulina Aldunce, Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resources, University of Chile. Her research interests are disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change. She also was part of the Expert Committee in charge of elaborating Chile´s National Action Plan on Climate Change , and was responsible to build a data base of climate change adaptation policies and strategies;
Katrina Brown, Professor of Development Studies at the University of East Anglia in UK, and Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre. Her research focuses on environmental change from an interdisciplinary perspective. She is co-editor of Global Environmental Change and is currently on a research fellowship on "Resilient development in social-ecological systems";
Anthony Patt, Researcher at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, where he leads the research group on Decisions and Governance within the Programme on Risk and Vulnerability. His interests are in individual and group decision-making patterns, and what these mean for the effectiveness of climate-related policies; and
Mark Pelling, Reader in Human Geography, King’s College London. His research interests cover social vulnerability and adatation with a focus on urban contexts. He is author of the Vulnerability of Cities (Earthscan), Disaster Risk Reduction: Cases from Urban Africa (Earthscan) and Natural Disasters and Development in a Globalising World (Routledge). He is Chair of the Climate Change Research Group, Royal Geographical Society.
